Nestled in the southeastern region of Sri Lanka, Yala National Park spans an impressive 979 square kilometers (378 sq mi) and borders the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. Located in a dry semi-arid region, Yala boasts a diverse ecosystem that includes monsoon forests, dry monsoon forests, thorn forests, marine and freshwater wetlands, grasslands, marshes, and sandy beaches along the coast. Its landscape is predominantly metamorphic rock, adorned with reddish-brown and grey soil. As rain graces the park during the northeast monsoon season, 215 bird species call this area home, making it one of Sri Lanka’s 70 important bird sanctuaries. Among the 44 mammal species, elephants, water buffaloes, sloth bears, and leopards thrive here. In fact, Yala National Park hosts one of the densest leopard populations in the world.[2]
How to Get There
You have a couple of options to reach Yala. Hire a taxi directly from Colombo, which would take you to Yala in about 4-5 hours, or take public transport. For an adventure, consider a scenic train ride to Matara or Beliatta (approximately 4 hours), followed by a 1-hour taxi drive to the park. Alternatively, catch a bus from Colombo to Kataragama (5 hours and 43 minutes), and then drive to Yala.
